6 Ways To Make a Viral Video – A How-To Parody

An absolute beginner’s crash course on how-to to go viral on Youtube , to go from zero to billions of views. In 6 or so super easy steps. I swear. We’ll tell you how to make it to the top. Some of what we say here can even be useful.

#1. Make people feel super good about themselves: Kony 2012

There’s nothing that gets viral quicker than telling a couple of suburban teenagers that they can change the world by putting up posters. Number of Views: 98,000,000. Here are three of those glorious viewers.

The video also executed simple but heart touching stories not just about the victims, but about the filmmaker Jason Russell and his kid. Not only did this make the video relatable to suburbia but it also drove ‘em to support the campaign.

#2. Get people to love to hate that one teenage girl we all know: Rebecca Black’s ‘Friday’

What have we learned? Repetition works!

Number of Views: 55,000,000. Pink Floyd’s “Money” music video has 700k. Yep.

“Friday” lyrics:

“(Yeah, Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ark) Oo-ooh-ooh, hoo yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah Yeah-ah-ah Yeah-ah-ah Yeah-ah-ah Yeah-ah-ah Yeah, yeah, yeah
(…)
It’s Friday, Friday Gotta get down on Friday Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday Gettin’ down on Friday Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah) Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah) Fun, fun, fun, fun Lookin’ forward to the weekend”

How did the worst song on earth become popular? Repetition baby. Repetition, repetition, repetition makes people remember and share. This song became popular for all the wrong reasons (i.e. people loved to hate it), but fame is fame and it became a huge hit on Youtube.

#3. Make everyone do a CRAZY dance for 15 seconds: Harlem Shake

Number of Views (All videos put together): 1,000,000,000+

To go viral, get everyone involved (including the 22-year vet in your mom’s office).

How did randomly dancing with weird themes become popular? Making videos of the Harlem Shake became one of the biggest trend on Youtube. The concept was easy to grasp and everyone did it: from Google to your mom and pop shops, from Harvard to Qunb.

If you get people off your butts, you’ll get views.

#4. Have a baby (or some other cute object, maybe a giraffe?) bite your finger: Charlie Bit My Finger

We all love kitten videos and so who could resist babies biting each other?

Number of Views: 530,000,000. And so many adorable laughs.

Anything super adorbz would work… Cute accents help too. So the tip is to be a little kid with a British accent!

#5. Just do the Gangnam Style!

How do you get a billion views? Or maybe 2 billion?

Number of Views: 1,710,000,000. I’m glad this is the most watched video of all time. Not “Friday”.

After the release of the music video, many celebrities tweeted about the song and it became viral. Everything from T.V show hosts to political campaigns worldwide had Psy perform his single and lots of people caught on to the Gangnam Style fever.

Having a wacky fashion sense, entertaining dance, and a ridiculous music video can help.

So, how do all you aspiring K-Pop revolutionaries out there become a pop culture revolution? Just do the Gangnam. It’s going to be hard to top Gangnam. But if you can top Gangnam… it would be Gangnam-lutionary. See, it’s all about repetition. Talking about which…

#6. Say ‘Baby’ 56 times in a song: Baby- Justin Bieber

How did a song by a little teenage boy about a girl he calls “baby” become popular?

Number of Views: 870,000,000. It was once the most viewed video on youtube. Not anymore. Not so disappoint, then.

We can’t stress this enough: repetition, repetition, repetition. Oh baby, in the song Justin Bieber was just being Justin Bieber and it also helps when you have Usher and a record label backing you up. The song was more hated than loved by the public but with all the attention and fans he became a world-wide phenomenon. And so in the same light we say:

Baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby.

#6 ¾. Analyze web traffic on your site and make an informed decision on your traffic

All those previous tips can really be summed up by: to get views, make good content.

But to do that, it will help you to know who’s coming to your website, and what they like on it.

At qunb we made it super simple to know just that. We make google analytics reports super simple. So you can spend time checking out cool videos on youtube rather than ploughing through all those ugly Google Analytics menu.
